Royal Pine

Originally the over sized air freshener was something I had created to use in my own home as a Christmas tree. In early December I was given the opportunity to hang the piece downtown at Clover to create a simple and clever holiday window display.

Thanks to the store's owner and Jillian Clark for facilitating the hang and helping me finish the lettering.

One of the projects I'm currently working on is a set of retail fixtures for a pop-up/gift shop. For the first time I will be attempting to use a computer controlled, 3-axis router to assist in the fabrication. Learning new software and creating the control files has been a challenge, but in the end it will end up saving both time and resources. Above is the model for the smallest piece, which serves as a building block for the larger fixtures. Six of these will be created in total. Below you can see the finished frames, along with some other renders.

Crisloid recently manufactured a small run of the travel backgammon set I designed for them. The set is a smaller interpretation of their popular attache' set, and features a thicker cut checker for increased playability. Look for different colorways in the future. The Tornado - Finished

Here's some gratuitous shots of the finished sculpture. In addition to this piece I also assisted with the finish work on the barn. Under the direction of Jim Irish, the entire structure was rebuilt bigger and better than it had ever been.

The party was amazing with almost the entire town turning out. Both the sculpture and the film were very well recieved. There was a ridiculous amount of delicious food with pulled pork and ice cream being made on site, a live bluegrass band and even a red carpet. This article from the State Journal-Register includes a great description of the event and includes some history of the Pine Lodge Farm and the town of Elkhart.

The Tornado - part 3

Once the skeleton was complete, the original plan was to use scrap wood and other debris left by the tornado to cover the piece. However, once I arrived in Illinois, I discovered that most of the wood had been recycled and used to construct the new barn. Anything left over was put in a large pile and burned a few days before I showed up. I was forced to come up with another solution quickly, as the event was only 2 days away.

I found a large roll of burlap fabric and quickly began cutting it into long strips. Each piece was around 15 to 20 feet in length and about 4 to 6 inches wide. With no little to no plan, I worked through the night wrapping the strips haphazardly around the piece.

Working at night provided relief from the hot summer sun, but made it difficult to see exactly what I was doing. As I added more and more fabric, it was hard to visualize what the final outcome would be. Nevertheless I continued stretching and stapling until I had upholstered the entire piece.

The next morning I was finally able to see the results, and was quite pleased. I added a few more strips for balance and called the piece finished. I toyed with the idea of adding more material to the outside. Possibly some scraps of wood or metal, maybe a few branches, but I ultimately decided that they would just detract from the piece. I liked the sharp angles and shape of the spiral enveloped by the natural burlap, which blended with its surroundings in both color and texture. When viewed from different angles, light shining through the layers of burlap created even more interesting shapes and depth. Years from now, as the piece ages, the burlap will weather and wear until all that is left is the skeleton once again.

The Tornado - part 2

The hardest part of this build was the location. Elkhart, Illinois is about 1300 miles from my studio and there was no way I could transport the finished piece that far. With just a few days on site and only a portion of my tools, it couldn't be constructed there in its entirety. The solution was to build the internal skeleton of the sculpture in my shop, break it down, pack it in my hatchback and drive it out with me. The final blueprint above shows the 11 octagons which would be pre-built along with their mounting blocks.

After 2 days of driving I arrived in Illinois and began assembly. The 12 foot, 4x4 post that would provide the backbone for the sculpture was already on site. After measuring and marking, I affixed the first few mounting blocks and octagons. Once the post was upright, I could mount the rest.

The next step was to cement a 4x4 aluminum tube into the ground. One stipulation of the piece was that it had to be removable for storage during the harsh winter. The wooden posts fits into the tube and is secured with a large bolt. When the sculpture needs to be moved, the bolt is simply removed and the piece can be lifted out for storage.

Once the cement dried, the post was installed and the rest of the octagons were mounted. This was actually the first time the skeleton was completely built. Although I had done mock-ups in my shop, I was unable to fully test everything beforehand due to height and time restrictions. Fortunately, it came together without a problem, and was better than I had hoped.

The Tornado

In August I traveled back to central Illinois for the premier of Funk's Grove, the independent film I worked on last summer. A huge party was thrown in celebration of both the movie and the rebuilding of the barn which was destroyed by a tornado shortly after we wrapped. I was asked to create a large sculpture to be displayed at the event, and remain on the property.

I played with several ideas before deciding that nothing would be more appropriate than to construct another large tornado and place it directly in the path of the actual funnel cloud. My justification being, that the piece would be partially constructed from the remnants of the old barn and other debris created by the disaster. I did have concerns that the hundreds of guests would be put off by the piece, not wanting to remember such a thing. Luckily, the response would be quite the opposite.

The final design stands 10 feet tall and consists of 11 octagons spiraling around a central post. The size of each octagon and its position relative to the post is determined by an exponential pattern of my own design. As you can see, I experimented with several different variations before deciding on a more robust funnel shape.

Salon Chair

A few months ago I picked up this salon hair dryer from an estate sale shop. After years of use, it was in pretty bad shape, but still worked. For the price, I couldn't pass it up. Knowing absolutely nothing about upholstery, I decided to completely renovate the piece.

The torn and dirty fabric was the first thing to be replaced. I found a few yards of bright purple vinyl at a local store and set to work cutting, stretching and stapling. The cushions were also replaced with new foam, making the chair much more comfortable. I had the piping custom made at a local shop, who also gave me some much needed advice. The white furniture nails serve both a practical and aesthetic purpose, securing the side panels to the frame.

The blower assembly and dials were completely rebuilt and rewired. All of the exposed metal was then painted flat gray. Through some creative taping and masking I was able to save the original foil stickers and dials.

Luckily, the original dome was not cracked, and cleaned up well. However, the arm rests were in bad shape and needed to be replaced. Using the originals as a template, I created a new set from red oak and finished them with a natural stain.

The chair is for sale, so feel free to email me for details. In the mean time, I've lent it out to the girls from Providence Pin-Up who recently used it in a shoot.

How not to build a door.

I tend to create a lot of dust and debris when working. So in order to keep electronics and finished projects out of harms way, I decided to turn the smaller space off the back of my studio into a clean room. The biggest hurdle was the irregular shape and size of the opening (about 6'x9')

Other factors also played into the final design. I did not want the door to have a large footprint and take up valuable floor space. I needed something lightweight, and easy to open by myself. There are numerous pipes and conduit running throughout the ceiling at varying heights. I did not want to spend more than $25, and I had absolutely no plan when I started building.

Ropes strung throughout the ceiling meet at an out of service fuse box where I can control and tie off the door. Pulling down on the main rope, opens the door halfway, and allows for personal access. The remaining two ropes fully open the door and allows for passage of larger objects. The two blocks on each side of the door lock it snugly against the wall, preventing any dust from getting in.

I also built a rack to hold all of the wood given to me by my friend Robin of Peacock Taco. I'll be elaborating on that in a future post.

After many years, I finally have my own pinball machine. almost.

The machine is a 1977 Atari Airborne Avenger, one of only 350 ever made. It's unique wide body design gives an additional few inches of play, and makes it appear much larger than a standard pinball. Atari pins are not very popular among collectors due to their rarity and the inability to find replacement parts. Although it appears to be in rough shape, the backglass is almost perfect (not pictured), and after cleaning and installing a new rubber set, the field looks brand new. I also built a custom dolly in order to move it around the shop and provide added support while working on it. One of the coolest parts is that this was the first machine designed by the legendary Steve Ritchie with art by George Opperman, who was the original artist for Atari. He designed the now famous Atari logo, as well as the box art for most of the original 2600 video games.

At the moment I'm saving up in order to get the 3 main boards checked and repaired. My limited electronics skills allowed me to locate at least one short circuit which is rendering the machine unplayable. However, repairing the circuit board is best left to someone with more experience. Hopefully by the end of the summer, I'll have the pin up and running so I can start on a new cabinet for it. I'll most likely swap the white out for a natural wood grain, re-chrome the legs and rails, and reproduce the side graphics using vinyl.

Peacelove Retail

Here's a retail display I did for Peacelove studios a few months ago. The concept was a large framed painting which breaks apart and sits atop pre-existing fixtures. When viewed from above or at certain angles, the painting appears to be whole. The sign was hand cut and painted.

For the past 2 months I've been working on a new website, hence the lack of updates. Although Blogger has been very good to me, I feel like it's time to move on to a portfolio based site with an integrated blog. I've slowly been learning the ins and outs of Wordpress, and hope to be live by the end of summer. In the meantime, I'm going to be updating this blog with some things I've been working on over the past few months and some upcoming project sketches.

Here's some in-progress pictures from my latest project. I was asked to build another installation at the PeaceLove Gallery to correspond with the opening of the "SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival." The large heart logo measures 8 feet tall and 7 feet wide, and was cut from a single sheet of wood which I created by layering several sheets of plywood. You can also see a few of the large Hollywood letters in the background which spell out SENE.

The large 3-D glasses measure over 18 feet wide and cover two existing windows in the gallery.

The Blues Altar

About a month ago, I was asked to build a piece that would compliment the work of artist Tom Zotos. His recent series of paintings, titled "Birth of the Blues," showcases various blues musicians such as Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones. Tom asked for an altar to be built on one wall of PeaceLove Studios which would then be adorned with paitings, instruments and other blues paraphernalia. The only direction given was to draw on the aesthetic of a juke joint.

The finished piece consists of 9 modular units, that when joined with only a few bolts, become a freestanding altar measuring 16' long and 10' high. The inner frame was created with conventional building materials, then finished with wood from recycled pallets and corrugated metal found at a local scrap yard.

Although heavy, the altar was moved and re-assembled in only a few hours. A tree from my art window earlier this year was also on display as a "blues family tree". The opening was well attended, and also featured artists Jeffery Sparr and Jillian Clark, as well as a live blues band. We're going back to add some lights and color on the wall for promotional shots in the coming weeks. I'll be sure to post them once they're done.

Pallets

For a number of reasons, wooden shipping pallets have been an integral part of many projects this year. Each board has a unique texture and color, created by years of abuse. Reproducing this look effectively would be near impossible. Most are uniform and size and are inherently strong, which makes them ideal for stacking and building simple structures. Best of all, they're almost always free, which helps when working with little to no budget.

Pallets are not without their faults though. Dismantling one is an arduous task, especially if you're trying to get the most out of it. An average pallets yields only 10 sq/ft of planking, assuming there is no significant damage. The upright 2x4s are usually discarded, as they are so riddled with nails they would destroy most saw blades. Another problem arises with the quality of the wood. Pallets are usually constructed from low end timber which is often warped. Individual boards are also weaker and unreliable, which makes them a poor choice for structual elements. For this reason, I tend to treat it like a veneer, using it to face sturdier material.

Pictured above is the smallest of 9 modular pieces that make up my current project. It will be my last to use pallets for the time being. Not only will I be using up most of my stock, but I want to start experimenting with higher grade materials and new methods this coming year. But first I need to finish the "Blues Altar" which goes up this week.

Halloween

This year for Halloween I decided to head out as Tony Stark; billionaire industrialist, alcoholic playboy, and (not so secret) identity of Iron Man. The costume was based primarily on Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of the character in the recent film adaptation of the comic.

The main component of the costume is the "arc reactor" which in the film, not only powers the suit, but keeps Stark alive. Unfortunately, there are no commercially available prop replicas that would suit my needs, so I made my own using photos and movie stills as reference.

The reactor consists of around fifty modified and scratch built parts. The three LEDs in the center are powered by a battery pack which fit in my front pocket. An elastic material was used to secure the piece to my chest and conceal the wiring. I'll post some pictures of the final costume once my friends get around to uploading them.

I try to document every idea that I have, no matter how trivial it may be. Whether its as simple as writing down a few words or building a full sized prototype. Unfortunately, other projects will come along and take precedence, and these ideas will get lost in the shuffle. I'm starting this series of posts as a way of revisiting these projects and possibly finishing a few.

The straight razor was a mock-up I created for use in a larger piece. At the time, it was only the blade and one side of the handle. It ended up being too large for my purposes, so I decided to finish the handle and bolt the entire thing together, thus creating a razor exactly 6 times the size of an original. I had a number of ideas on what to do with it, but never settled on anything. If I don't come up with anything soon, I'll probably paint it and hang it up in my bathroom, but I hope to think of something a little more interesting.

The Yankee I

"The Yankee Planking Bevel I is mad of maple wood and brass. It can be used on new construction or repair work. By adjusting the slide to the correct width, bevels for planking from 2” to 7½” in width, any thickness, and ½” back-out may be precisely picked up and recorded on a bevel board."Pictured is an original Yankee I, the first in a series of tools my grandfather created almost thirty years ago. In my continuing effort to understand how they work, I initially had to learn how a classic boat is constructed. Here is a (very) brief overview of what I've found so far.

Wooden ship hulls are built in several different ways. The Yankee I is made for use with the carvel method, shown on the far left. A recent article in Wooden Boat magazine likens carvel planking to a wooden barrel. "Barrel staves, analogous to our planks, are laid tightly alongside one another, and taper at the ends. A wooden boat hull is similar, but with a few extra curves thrown in." Carvel planking not only provides a cleaner look, but is also easiest to repair, as individual planks can be replaced without disturbing adjacent ones.

The edges where these planks meet vary in angle depending on their location along the frame. The Yankee I is used to copy and transfer that angle from one board to the next. The more accurate this bevel, the better the overall construction of the craft.

I am just about finished rendering the tool for both reference and illustrative purposes. My next step will be to recreate a Yankee I using one of the unfinished blanks found in the trunk. I will also be attempting to build a hull model similar to the one my grandfather displayed at shows using old photographs and his original diagrams as reference.

Forts!

This is what happens when I get bored.

Spike Jonze's blog, WeLoveYouSo and Booooooom, had a competition this weekend to promote the "Where the Wild Things Are" movie. The premise was simple, build an awesome fort.

I assembled my entry in about two days using a pile of old pallets. No nails or screws were used in the construction of the actual fort. Instead the pallets were lashed together with hundreds of feet of twine. The entire structure is surprisingly sturdy, even up on the third level.

Unfortunately, this is only temporary. As much as I'd like to keep/live in it, I'll need the wood and space for an upcoming project. Check out the site to see the other entries, all of which are amazing. I was really impressed with the quality and volume of submissions.

Yankee Bevels

During his 50+ years as a boat builder, my grandfather developed a series of tools know as the Yankee Bevels. Although he undoubtedly used these in his own work for years, it was not until the early 80's that he began fabricating the tools and making them available to the public. They were sold primarily through a small mail order operation and at classic boat shows around New England, several of which I was lucky enough to attend with him. However, after his passing in the mid 90's, the Bevels and all related material, were placed in a steamer trunk and put into storage.

It was not until recently when I was contacted by Wooden Boat magazine did I consider digging out the trunk. Apparently, the bevels are still in use by classic boat builders throughout the area, and the magazine wants to recognize that. What started as a search for some old clippings and paperwork has turned into a full time project. Over the past month I have been digitizing, drawing, and modeling in order to launch a new website and possibly do a limited production run of my own using both new and old stock. For now, I still have much to learn, and will be detailing the entire process here in future posts.

Last week I set up one of the trees to help display the window paintings in a newer Pawtucket gallery. I had to shave a few inches off of the upper branches, but eventually got it to fit. I really like the the way the wood looked against the gray wall, and ended up taking a few pictures. One of which I submitted to Providence's "Buy Art" campaign.

The city is choosing 5 images to be used in this year's button campaign. The buttons are sold at various retail shops as part of "a city-wide advocacy initiative that spurs us all to actively participate in the Providence Arts Scene." In addition to the exposure, winners also receive a generous stipend, which would almost cover the amount I've paid in parking tickets over the past few years.

Congratulations to Providence Art Windows, which was picked the best of public art in the latest Rhode Island Monthly poll. Included with the article was a picture of our recent window.

"If there's one upside to downtown Providence's vacant shop windows, it's that Providence Art Windows has filled many of them with paintings, installations and sculpture. Works are changed up three times a year, with each show featuring ten pieces by local and national artists. The display (mostly contained to Washington and Westminster streets) is free and open to the public twenty-four-seven, so there's really no excuse not to check it out. That is, of course, if you can manage to score a parking spot in Downcity."

Also, The local newspaper in Lincoln, IL did a great story on the "Funk's Grove" movie. I'll have some better scans soon now that I have an actual copy (Thanks Tara!) I should mention that the farm where we stayed/filmed was hit by a tornado a few days after we left. No one was hurt, but the large barn which housed several props/sets was completely destroyed.

Consolation Prizes

So I didn't win a lifetime supply of notebooks, but I did get a few great things from the good people at Moleskine Asia. The exhibition looked awesome, taking place at several locations. My piece was shown at the City'super! Harbour City. Unfortunately, even after sending written instructions and drawings, my entry was still displayed improperly. I'm told it was eventually fixed, but for now I'll just use that as my excuse for not winning.

The Exactra 20

I picked up this 1974 Texas Instruments calculator at a thrift store in Indianapolis for under a dollar. Curious to see if it was worth anything, I did some research, and learned some interesting information about the piece.

While building the props for the original Star Wars movie, the art department frequently scavenged parts from existing technology. The seven LEDs in the Exactra's display were used in the creation of Luke's first lightsaber.

The Exactra 20 and its predecessor the Exactra 19 were the only two calculators produced with this 7 LED array. As a result, the calculators are in high demand with enthusiasts and reproduction prop builders. This one will most likely end up on E-bay soon.

I recently drove out to Illinois to work on a film my friend wrote and directed. Jill and I served as Art Department, making props and dressing sets among other things. "Harold" was one of the props I built while there to mimic an actual human body under canvas. Working with a very limited budget, I was able to put together the entire rig for under one hundred dollars. The bulk of the cost went to the purchase of a fiberglass mannequin which I used for the base. An elastic material was used throughout the interior of the body to create realistic movement.

Moleskine 2.0 prototype

Finished up the prototype for the exhibition in Hong Kong. I had to omit the third translucent tracing panel, as I ran out of both time and room in the notebook. This project was especially challenging due to the nature of the materials. However, I am very pleased with the finished product, and to my own amazement it actually works quite well.

Moleskine 2.0

My Moleskine 2.0 would entail adding three hinged panels to the inside cover of the book. Each of these panels would contain a different type of plexi-glass, one mirrored, one magnifying and one translucent. When combined in different ways, these panels would perform a variety of functions. Using the mirrored and magnifying panel, one can view media from their portable device enlarged and upright. Similar to how a projection television or arcade cabinet works. Setting the magnifying and translucent panels to 45 degree angles creates a tracing tool similar to those from our childhood. By looking through the translucent panel from the left side, any image placed on the magnifying panel seems to appear on the pages of the book. All of these positions would be achieved through a simple hinge and magnet system. In addition to these two functions, the mirror and magnifier could also be used for their intended purposes, signaling search planes and burning ants.

The Guillotine!

The guillotine I built turned out to be much more effective than I originally anticipated. The prop was a huge success at sign-ups where we shredded heads of lettuce and sheared beer cans in two. It will make it's first in-game appearance this Saturday at Armory park when the French battle CBP in our opening bout.

I made this at the request of Jill for this years benefit at AS220. It is exactly six times the size of an actual wine opener, and moves in the same fashion. The entire apparatus took about 3 days to build.

"This was one of the most inventive costumes I've ever seen... The thing actually worked! Well, we didn't have a gigantic wine bottle to test it out on, but it went up and down and the mechanics on this thing was truly magical." (via AS220 flikr)
